Fighting Deepfakes: Media and Internet Giants’ Converging and Diverging Strategies Against Hi-Tech Misinformation

Deepfakes, one of the most novel forms misinformation, have become a real challenge in communicative environment due to their spread through online news and social media spaces. Although fake existed for centuries, its circulation is now more harmful than ever before, thanks ease production dissemination. At this juncture, technological development has led emergence deepfakes, doctored videos, audios or photos that use artificial intelligence. Since inception 2017, tools algorithms enable modification faces sounds audiovisual content evolved point where there are mobile apps web services allow average users manipulation. This research tries show how three renowned outlets—<em>The Wall Street Journal</em>,<em> The Washington Post</em>,<em> </em>and<em> Reuters</em>—and biggest Internet-based companies—Google, Facebook, Twitter—are dealing with new form news. Results identification deepfakes common practice both types organizations. However, while focused on training journalists detection, platforms tended fund projects whose objective develop improve forensics tools.
